Surf Yoga Tiree 2015

An active two week retreat on the remote Hebridean island of Tiree – I taught yoga to our retreat group and the local residents twice a day, and in between we had fun on the beach, offering our guests surf lessons in the small waves. Evenings were spent around a beach fire, where our food was expertly created and cooked by our River Cottage trained chef Sam Lomas, or relaxing in the comfort of our Island House retreat venue – no less than the Duke of Argyll’s residence!

I had so much fun planning and delivering the yoga classes to a full range of levels and abilities, needs and desires. It was a real pleasure to teach and share the benefits of yoga, on an otherwise very quiet island.

The trail running possibilities can take you all the way around the island – about 36 miles – taking in the best of the island, which are the glorious white sand beaches. Alternatively you can run over spongey moorland and up the very few hills! There is an ultra-marathon here in September, only in it’s second year, which cirum-navigates the island and can be run solo or in teams.

As for the surfing, we were a little unlucky, as usually at this time of year there is consistent swell pushing in clean 2-3 foot waves. However, we had to manage with more like 1 foot and onshore for much of the time, still perfect fun for our learners!

If you adore stunning white sand beaches but want to avoid the crowds and don’t mind cold water, then this is the place for you!
